Malaysia — Open DC has launched PE2, Penang’s first large-scale next-generation data centre, located within the Bayan Lepas Technology Park.
The facility has been developed to address the rising demand for high-performance computing and low-latency connectivity, strengthening Penang’s position in the regional digital economy. Spanning a 10-acre campus, PE2 is currently Penang’s largest and most advanced data centre, equipped with a 30MW power capacity.
It is designed to support high-capacity racks for compute-intensive workloads such as artificial intelligence (AI) and large language model (LLM) applications. The centre also offers scalability for enterprises and small and medium-sized businesses pursuing digital transformation.
Weng-Yew Wong, managing director at Open DC stated that PE2 is a game-changer for Malaysia’s digital economy, delivering next-generation AI, cloud, and Industry 4.0 innovations.
“We’re proud to lead Penag into a new era of connectivity and sustainability. PE2’s advanced technology, strategic location, and focus on sustainability make it the ideal hub for businesses looking to thrive in the digital age,” Weng-Yew commented.
Sustainability is a core feature of the facility. PE2 incorporates renewable energy agreements, solar solutions and eco-efficient systems to minimise environmental impact while delivering reliable, energy-efficient operations.
The data centre also integrates DE-CIX Malaysia’s Penang Internet Exchange transport node, enabling faster local internet traffic exchange, reduced latency and improved connectivity for telecom providers. This development is expected to benefit key industries including technology, manufacturing and financial services.
Strategically positioned near Penang International Airport and major highways, PE2 benefits from a resilient electrical grid, ensuring consistent power supply and operational reliability.
Open DC is working in collaboration with InvestPenang to strengthen the Penang Silicon Design @5KM+ (PSD@5KM+) ecosystem, an initiative aimed at developing a world-class hub for semiconductor design and digital innovation.
By providing critical digital infrastructure, PE2 supports this ecosystem and contributes to Penang’s ambition of becoming a premier destination for advanced technology investment.
“This kind of infrastructure support is critical in realising our shared aspiration for a thriving chip design ecosystem and advancing the ‘Made by Malaysia Chip’ vision,” Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO of InvestPenang, stated.
“As we position Penang as a premier destination for advanced technology investments, infrastructure partners like Open DC are pivotal in shaping a future-ready, innovation-driven landscape.”
With a focus on sustainability, scalability and digital innovation, PE2 represents a significant step in enabling Penang’s digital transformation while advancing Malaysia’s position in the APAC digital economy.
