South Korea – Samsung Electronics has entered into a strategic partnership with Mistral AI to develop and implement on-premises artificial intelligence technologies across its semiconductor operations.

The partnership, announced during a state summit between South Korea and France in Paris, will see Samsung integrate Mistral AI’s services and solutions, including its Mistral Large large language model, into its semiconductor operations. The companies will work on customised AI models designed for use within Samsung’s semiconductor infrastructure.

The companies said the on-premises approach is intended to allow sensitive technology and operational data to be processed within Samsung’s semiconductor infrastructure, giving the company greater control over information used in its operations.

The collaboration will focus on applications including defect detection and equipment optimisation, with Samsung aiming to use AI to support data analysis within semiconductor fabrication facilities. The company said these applications could help accelerate development cycles, improve manufacturing precision and support yield stabilisation across advanced memory and logic chips.

“Increasing complexities involved in AI chip design and manufacturing requires continuous innovation in semiconductor technologies,” said Young Hyun Jun, Vice Chairman & CEO of the Device Solutions (DS) Division at Samsung Electronics.

“We look forward to working with Mistral and supporting the evolving needs of customers, while delivering new breakthroughs across the semiconductor ecosystem essential to the AI era,” he continued.

“AI is reshaping how we build complex technologies, from silicon to software,” said Arthur Mensch, Co-founder and CEO of Mistral.

“We are proud to support Samsung Electronics with our expertise in electronics and semiconductors, helping to improve how chips are designed and manufactured, and to accelerate technical progress across the global semiconductor and AI value chain,” Mensch continued.

Alongside the technology partnership, Samsung has made a lead investment in Mistral AI’s Series D funding round, securing a strategic equity stake in the company. The investment is intended to support the companies’ longer-term technology collaboration.

Samsung said the partnership forms part of its wider efforts to apply AI across its semiconductor operations, covering areas including advanced memory, logic and foundry services.
