Malaysia — U Mobile has announced a strategic collaboration with OpenAI aimed at expanding the use of artificial intelligence across its operations, customer services, enterprise offerings and cybersecurity.

The collaboration will give U Mobile early access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models, with the companies set to explore and develop practical AI applications across the telecommunications provider’s business.

Areas under consideration include internal process automation, software development, data analytics and data science, network operations, cybersecurity, and brand and digital-content capabilities.

Neil Tomkinson, Chief Information Officer of U Mobile, said,”Innovation has always been part of U Mobile’s DNA. From introducing new digital experiences to building Malaysia’s next-generation 5G network, we have consistently challenged ourselves to raise industry standards. Today, Artificial Intelligence represents the next frontier of transformation, and our strategic collaboration with OpenAI marks another defining milestone in that journey.”

“At U Mobile, we believe AI is most powerful when it amplifies human potential. As we transform into an AI-enabled telco, we are embedding AI across every part of our business to help our people work smarter, make better decisions and focus on creating greater value for our customers. By combining human expertise with advanced AI capabilities, we can innovate faster, respond more intelligently to changing customer needs and unlock new opportunities for growth,” he added.

“This is not simply about adopting AI—it is about reimagining how a telco operates so we can continue setting new benchmarks for innovation, customer experience and operational excellence,” Tomkinson said.

Fred Groen, Head of Mid-Market GTM, Asia Pacific, at OpenAI, said,“U Mobile is showing what it means to put AI at the heart of an organisation, and we’re proud that this marks OpenAI’s first collaboration with a telecommunications provider in Malaysia.”

“Together with U Mobile and our partners at AWS, we will look at how AI can support every part of U Mobile’s business from helping its people work more effectively and creating better customer experiences to enabling businesses to innovate and strengthen cybersecurity. We look forward to taking this important step together and seeing the impact it can have across Malaysia,” he continued.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) will support the collaboration through cloud infrastructure and technical expertise as U Mobile develops and scales AI solutions powered by OpenAI’s models.

The collaboration will focus on four areas: building AI capabilities among U Mobile’s workforce, developing more personalised customer experiences, supporting innovation among enterprises and ecosystem partners, and strengthening cybersecurity.

As part of the partnership, OpenAI will become an Anchor Partner of U Mobile’s Enterprise Innovation Platform (EIP). The platform is intended to provide opportunities for businesses, startups, developers and academia to co-create, test and validate AI solutions using frontier AI models.

U Mobile and OpenAI will also explore potential AI-enabled products, services and partnerships aimed at expanding access to AI for consumers and businesses.

Cybersecurity is another area of focus, with the companies set to explore applications of AI in cyber resilience, threat detection and incident response, alongside measures to support the responsible and secure adoption of AI across U Mobile’s operations and enterprise ecosystem.

The partnership forms part of U Mobile’s broader effort to integrate AI across its business while using its 5G network and AI capabilities to support customers, enterprises and Malaysia’s digital economy.
