Bengluru, India – Truecaller has launched Scam Checker, a web and Android tool that lets users assess suspicious links, phone numbers and messages in a single place, the company announced on 24 September from Bengaluru, India.
According to Truecaller, the new destination extends its scam protection beyond caller identification and spam blocking. It draws on the company’s detection systems and the scam intelligence of its 500 million users, the company says.
Scam Checker brings several scam-detection capabilities into one experience, allowing users to investigate a possible fraud attempt before they act on it.
First, users can check a link for signs that it may be malicious or used in a phishing attempt. They can also look up a phone number to see what Truecaller’s detection systems and community signals indicate.
In addition, the tool lets people search Scamfeed reports to find similar scams described by other users.
Users can also describe a concern in their own words. The tool then returns relevant results, including checks on any links or numbers in the query and related community reports.
Truecaller says these functions cover the three elements a suspicious message usually contains: a number, a link and a story. A person can check all three in the same place, in seconds, according to the company.
Rishit Jhunjhunwala, CEO of Truecaller, described the problem the tool is meant to address.
“People often sense that something is wrong, but they need a quick way to check before responding,” said Jhunjhunwala.
He then outlined how the product responds to that need.
“Scam Checker brings together our detection capabilities and what our community has reported so that people can investigate a suspicious link, number or story in one place,” he continued.
Looking ahead, Truecaller plans to expand the tool with broader coverage of scam techniques, screenshot uploads for richer analysis and user authentication. The company also intends to add further capabilities in the near future.
