Fastly appoints former Google exec Rumi Oku as Area Vice President for Japan

Tokyo, Japan – Fastly has appointed Rumi Oku as Area Vice President for Japan, tasking the former Google Cloud and HashiCorp executive with expanding the company’s customer base, strengthening partner relationships, and driving business growth in the country.

The appointment was announced by the edge cloud platform provider on June 1. Oku brings more than two decades of experience in the technology sector, including leadership roles in enterprise sales and organisational management.

Before joining Fastly, Oku served as Head of Sales for Gaming, Media, and Entertainment at Google Cloud Japan, where she led the business unit focused on those sectors and worked with enterprise customers on digital transformation initiatives. Prior to that, she held leadership positions at HashiCorp Japan, including Sales Director and Partner Sales Director, and was involved in the launch of the company’s Japanese subsidiary.

In her new role, Oku will focus on acquiring large enterprise customers, developing partnerships, and supporting Fastly’s growth strategy in Japan.

“I am deeply honored and excited to take on the role of Head of Japan for Fastly, a company whose evolution I have followed closely for years,” said Oku. “In the age of AI, where the balance between security and speed defines business success, Fastly’s technology – which delivers world-class value at the edge – is essential for corporate transformation. Leveraging my experience in the enterprise sector, I am committed to helping our Japanese customers grow their businesses and provide the best possible experiences for their end-users through Fastly’s innovative platform.”

The appointment comes as Fastly continues to expand its presence in Japan, which the company identified as a strategic growth market amid increasing demand for digital performance and security solutions.

According to Nicola Gerber, Vice President for Asia Pacific and Japan at Fastly, Oku’s experience in enterprise sales and partnership development aligns with the company’s regional growth objectives.

“Japan is a critical growth market for Fastly, and Rumi’s exceptional track record of driving enterprise success and building strategic alliances is exactly what we need to accelerate our momentum. As businesses pivot toward an AI-powered future, the demand for edge security and performance has never been higher. I am confident that Rumi’s deep industry expertise and customer-centric leadership will be instrumental in helping Japanese organisations deliver fast, secure, and unmatched digital experiences,” Gerber said.
