Straits Interactive, AAP team up for prompt design challenge to promote AI tools

Manila, Philippines – The Philippines is emerging as a hotbed for artificial intelligence (AI) innovation, as demonstrated by the recently concluded National AI Prompt Design Challenge (NAIPDC), a pioneering competition organized by Singapore-based edtech and data governance firm Straits Interactive in collaboration with the Analytics and AI Association of the Philippines (AAP).

Drawing close to 600 participants from more than 40 educational institutions and 20 industries—spanning Metro Manila to Quezon and Pangasinan—the challenge revealed the growing enthusiasm among Filipinos to engage with generative AI. Importantly, it highlighted prompt engineering as a key skill poised to democratize AI development across sectors.

AI Is Not Just for Programmers

Unlike traditional coding competitions, the NAIPDC focused on prompt design—using natural language to communicate with AI tools—making the contest accessible to non-technical individuals. Participants from sectors such as education, finance, business, and marketing built functioning no-code AI applications, proving that technical backgrounds are no longer a prerequisite for impactful AI development.

“This challenge has shown that AI is truly for everyone,” said Kevin Shepherdson, founder and CEO of Straits Interactive. “Prompt engineering, when combined with domain expertise, enables individuals to create powerful and relevant AI solutions without needing to write a single line of code.”

Innovation Across Sectors

Nearly 200 submissions showcased a wide variety of real-world applications of AI, from government digitalization tools to personalized learning assistants. Among the standout projects:

  • Export Buddy – An AI assistant that guides aspiring Filipino exporters through the entire export process, offering 24/7 support on regulations, documentation, and post-export procedures.
  • BldgGuide PH – A chatbot designed to help construction professionals understand and comply with the Philippine Building Code, streamlining the permitting process.
  • Kuya FReady – A localized chatbot offering step-by-step assistance for securing government IDs and official documents, aimed at empowering young Filipinos.

Other creative applications included productivity tools, gamified learning platforms like CodeQuest, image-based diagnostic assistants, and culturally themed AI tutors that promote Filipino heritage.

Prompt Engineering: The Language of AI

The competition underscored the role of prompt engineering as the new literacy in an AI-driven world. Often described as “programming with the English language,” prompt engineering enables professionals across industries to build AI assistants tailored to their workflows—opening doors for innovation without needing deep technical knowledge.

Nationwide Reach and Inclusive Growth

Notably, many finalists came from areas outside Metro Manila, signaling the potential to scale AI skills development nationwide. Organizers view this as a key step toward aligning the country’s AI growth with inclusive and sustainable development goals.

The overarching message from the NAIPDC was clear: AI is a tool for augmentation, not replacement. As industries adapt, those equipped with prompt engineering skills will be better positioned to drive transformation and enhance productivity.

“AI won’t replace you—but someone who knows how to use it might,” the organizers emphasized, highlighting the importance of upskilling in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

With its successful debut, the NAIPDC marks a milestone in the Philippines’ journey toward broad-based, responsible, and inclusive AI adoption.
