Singapore —FairPrice Group (FPG), Singapore’s largest retailer, has expanded its multi-year collaboration with Google Cloud to introduce new agentic AI applications across customer and employee touchpoints aimed at reshaping retail experiences while enhancing operational efficiency.
As part of the initiative, FairPrice has launched a suite of AI assistants developed with Google Cloud’s Agent Development Kit (ADK) and open standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP). These assistants are now available at FairPrice Finest Punggol Digital District.
FairPrice has upgraded its Smart Carts with multimodal conversational AI to provide shoppers with product recommendations, in-store navigation, and promotional insights. The system integrates multiple agents, including speech recognition, product search, and knowledge-based agents to offer tailored suggestions, such as recipe-based shopping lists.
FPG is also testing Google’s Vertex AI Search for Commerce to refine product discovery and accommodate local language queries, semantic variations, and dialect-specific terms.
Thomas Kurian, chief executive officer of Google Cloud explained how their platform offers a wide range of software services including infrastructure, open platforms, models, tooling, and agents that enable organisations to enhance business operations using AI.
“FPG’s use of these—extending from the storefront to the back office—is an incredible example of how AI is driving innovation across customer touchpoints and corners of the enterprise,” Thomas said.
To meet specialised customer needs, FPG has deployed distinct AI-powered assistants. At the Unity pharmacy in FairPrice Finest Punggol Digital District, a wellness assistant provides personalised lifestyle guidance and shopping lists based on body composition analysis and health goals. In parallel, a digital wine sommelier allows shoppers to use NFC-enabled shelf labels to receive curated wine recommendations, tasting notes, and food pairings.
“The new AI-powered tools, from the smart shopping assistant to the personalised wellness assistant, are designed to make a shopper’s journey more seamless and intuitive,” Vipul Chawla, group chief executive officer at FairPrice Group explained.
“These innovations don’t just ‘wow’ our shoppers, they also empower our employees to work more efficiently, so as to uphold our promise of providing affordable daily essentials for all.”
Beyond customer-facing tools, FPG is implementing Google Cloud’s Agentspace to support employees.
This platform enables staff to access AI-powered intranet search, utilise prebuilt and custom agents, and automate workflows. Teams in areas such as pricing and promotions have already adopted a creative AI agent to generate advertising content, significantly reducing time and costs associated with campaign production.
FairPrice plans to expand its use of agentic AI within functions including human resources, customer service, operations, and marketing. Security and compliance features within Agentspace will govern employee access and use of these tools.
The extended collaboration highlights Singapore’s growing role in advancing AI-enabled retail models and positions FairPrice’s Store of Tomorrow as an early example of agentic AI deployment in Southeast Asia.
