United States – NetApp has announced that capabilities in its ONTAP data management platform have been tested and validated to support VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.1.

The validation is intended to enable customers using both platforms to deploy VCF 9.1 with NetApp’s data infrastructure, including storage, data protection, and cyber resilience capabilities.

VCF 9.1 provides a private cloud platform for running traditional and modern workloads, including virtual machines and containerised applications. According to NetApp, its solutions can support VCF 9.1 environments as customers upgrade to the latest release.

The company said its first-party cloud storage services are certified to support VMware Cloud Foundation environments across major hyperscale cloud providers. Through VCF licence portability, customers can also deploy VMware Cloud Foundation in certified hyperscaler environments and run VMware workloads in the cloud without refactoring.

“To keep up with the rapid pace of innovation required to thrive in a competitive landscape, enterprises need flexibility to move and place workloads in the best environment to which they are suited,” said Alvaro Celis, Chief Partner and Ecosystem Officer at NetApp.

“NetApp continues to innovate to ensure VCF customers can operate consistently and without disruption across cloud environments. Together with Broadcom, we are giving organizations the autonomy to optimize, protect, and scale their virtualized environments across any cloud on their own terms, safeguarding their existing operational investments while unlocking the future,” he continued.

NetApp said the combination of ONTAP and VCF 9.1 can be used for primary storage across VCF management and workload domains. The company also highlighted NetApp Console Backup and Recovery and NetApp Console Data Services as tools for data protection and cyber resilience.

ONTAP Tools for VMware is also set to introduce datastore-level replication and consistency group management. These capabilities are designed to be accessible through the vCenter user interface and REST APIs for VCF Operations Orchestrator, according to NetApp.

The company said the capabilities can be used across on-premises data centres and VCF environments deployed on public cloud infrastructure.

NetApp has also had its support for VMware vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) tested and validated for VCF 9.1 environments. The integration is intended to allow customers to run containerised workloads alongside existing virtualised applications while using established VMware management tools and operational processes.

NetApp said the combined environment can support DevOps workflows, continuous integration and continuous delivery, and microservices-based application development on the same VCF 9.1 and ONTAP infrastructure.

“Broadcom and NetApp have long collaborated on solutions that help organizations simplify operations, protect critical data, and innovate faster,” said Paul Turner, Chief Product Officer, VMware Cloud Foundation Division at Broadcom.

“With VCF 9.1, we are delivering an AI- and Kubernetes-native private cloud platform that maximises infrastructure efficiency and security. Because NetApp’s solutions are tested and validated to support VCF 9.1 environments, our mutual customers can adopt these innovations with a data infrastructure foundation that is proven and ready,” Turner continued.
