Manila, Philippines – Google Wallet and Google Pay have been officially launched in the Philippines, marking a significant expansion of Google’s payments ecosystem in the country.
The services are now available through several partner banks, fintech firms, and global payments companies, including Visa and Mastercard. Cardholders from participating institutions can add their debit and credit cards to Google Wallet and make transactions using Android phones or Wear OS devices wherever contactless payments are accepted.
The launch enables tap-to-pay functionality to a broader base of Filipino consumers. Google Wallet serves as a digital container for payment cards, travel documents, loyalty passes, event tickets and other credentials typically stored in a physical wallet, while Google Pay enables both in-store and online transactions.
Alongside banks such as ChinaBank, EastWest, RCBC, GoTyme, Maya, UnionBank and Wise, several digital platforms have begun integrating with Google’s payments system.
Among them is GCash, whose Mastercard-branded cards can now be added to Google Wallet. This will allow eligible users to activate GCash as a funding source for payments made through Google Pay. The feature is currently available to a limited number of users and will be extended more broadly in the near future.
“We’re proud to work with GCash to bring faster, convenient, and more secure payments to the Philippines,” Prep Palacios, country manager for Google Philippines, commented.
“This launch underscores our enduring commitment to accelerating financial inclusion and fueling the next chapter of the Philippines’ dynamic digital economy.”
Android users can set up Google Wallet by downloading the app from the Play Store. Once installed, they can add cards issued by participating banks and fintech providers. Users linking GCash must complete the process through the GCash app by accessing the linked accounts section and proceeding with verification steps before being redirected to Google Pay.
“This integration empowers our users to move through digital and physical spaces with greater ease, security, and reach, anchored in our purpose of making the everyday lives of Filipinos better,” Ren-Ren Reyes, president and CEO of G-Xchange Inc., said.
The wider rollout is also expected to enhance convenience for both domestic and international transactions. Travellers can store boarding passes from airlines such as Philippine Airlines, AirAsia, Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines, and receive real-time updates on schedule or gate changes.
Contactless transport payments are also expanding. Commuters can already use Google Wallet on MRT-3 in Manila, in modern jeepneys across Cebu and Mandaue City, and on services where Visa and Mastercard are accepted. Support for additional routes, including ticketing via the Beep app, is expected to follow.
Online shoppers will be able to complete purchases through Google Pay on platforms such as Shopee, with more merchants to be added through payment service providers, including PesoPay, Payermax, and others set to join soon.
Industry groups highlighted that tokenisation technology underpins the security of Google Wallet and Google Pay. Each time a card is added, the actual card number is replaced with a unique digital token, ensuring sensitive information is not shared with merchants.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas welcomed the expansion of tap-to-pay services, viewing the development as an opportunity to encourage wider adoption of digital payments nationwide.
