Chennai, India – Equinix has expanded its presence in India with the opening of its first International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre, CN1, in Chennai.
The facility, located in Siruseri, is interconnected with Equinix’s three IBX data centres in Mumbai, strengthening India’s digital infrastructure and supporting the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced technologies.
It also offers a suite of interconnection services, including Equinix Fabric, enabling enterprises to build secure, hybrid multicloud environments.
“We are delighted to announce the launch of state-of-the-art IBX data centre CN1, marking Equinix’s expansion in India and a pivotal step in advancing the country’s digitalisation journey,” Manoj Paul, managing director, India at Equinix, commented.
“This milestone highlights our commitment to empowering India’s position as a global technology hub while ensuring sustainability and innovation remain at the core of our operations.”
Chennai has emerged as a strategic hub for technology and AI in India, complementing Tamil Nadu’s role in attracting investment in innovation and research. With India’s increasing focus on AI, quantum computing, blockchain and edge computing, the launch of CN1 represents a significant step in expanding the digital capacity needed to enable these advancements and strengthen India’s position in global digital services.
The CN1 facility incorporates features to enhance both sustainability and operational resilience. It is designed with a fault-tolerant architecture for high uptime, is prepared for liquid cooling to support AI workloads, and includes multiple fibre paths to ensure reliability.
The site also reflects Equinix’s commitment to renewable energy through investments in solar and wind power, while offering interconnection services such as Equinix Fabric and Fabric Cloud Router to facilitate secure, scalable digital infrastructure.
The CN1 campus is a four-storey building located on SIPCOT land in Siruseri, approximately 28 km from Chennai’s Central Business District and near planned submarine cable landing sites. The facility provides 800 cabinets in its first phase, with total capacity planned at 4,250 cabinets, and is fully AI-ready with liquid cooling and robust interconnection services.
