Nokia, Extreme Broadband to modernise data centres in Malaysia

Malaysia — Nokia has signed a contract with Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its subsidiary Open DC to upgrade Open DC’s artificial intelligence (AI) data centres in Malaysia.

The project aims to strengthen network security, enhance performance, and support Malaysia’s National Cloud Computing Policy, with a particular focus on meeting the needs of the banking and financial services sector.

EBB will use Nokia’s IP network solutions to interconnect six AI data centres located in Cyberjaya, Johor Bahru, Penang, and Kedah.

The deployment is designed to deliver improved reliability, security, and scalability across facilities, including CJ1 Cyberjaya, JB1 Menara MSC Cyberport, JB2 Menara Ansar, PE1 Menara Suntech, PE2 Bayan Lepas Industrial Park, and the upcoming D8-1 in Kedah.

Kent Wong, vice president and head of IP networks for Asia Pacific at Nokia, shared how this collaboration gives the company a bigger role in Malaysia’s growing data centre industry.

“The deployment will enable Open DC to leverage our data centre switching, automation and quantum-safe networking technologies to provide a crucial business edge to their customers,” Kent explained.

Alongside this agreement, Nokia and EBB have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on data centre solutions and quantum-safe networks. The partnership will focus on developing joint strategies for AI and data centre connectivity, with services such as multi-cloud connectivity, enterprise connectivity, and distributed denial of service (DDoS) protection.

Wong Weng Yew, managing director at Open DC, stated that the collaboration highlights the company’s commitment to pioneering technologies that deliver exceptional value to customers and contribute to Malaysia’s economic growth under the MYDIGITAL policy.

“Nokia’s solutions will enhance our security, scalability, and sustainability, enabling us to build connectivity hubs that support AI-driven innovation and create new revenue opportunities for enterprises,” Wong Weng said.

Both companies will also work together on testing and validating technologies, including the Data Centre Gateway, Data Centre Fabric with event-driven automation tools, and DDoS mitigation solutions.

The deployment will use Nokia’s Data Centre Fabric, Data Centre Gateway, and quantum-safe networking technologies to support Open DC’s modernisation plans. Nokia’s 7250 and 7220 interconnect routers will also be implemented to increase energy efficiency and ensure long-term scalability.
