Singapore – Business leaders are expecting that adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) applications will create a surge in data volumes, accelerating the demand for cloud storage solutions. This is according to the latest findings from Seagate Technology’s commissioned survey by Recon Analytics.

As hard drives deliver scalability relative to terabyte-per-dollar cost efficiencies, cloud service providers continue to rely on hard drives to store mass quantities of data.

In the report, more than half (53%) of respondents in Singapore anticipate their organisation’s hard-drive-supported cloud storage to more than double by 2028, slightly below the global average of 61%. AI adoption in Singapore was also reported at 62%, significantly lower than the global figure of 72%.

Meanwhile, key findings revealed that security ranks as the most important element of AI infrastructure globally, followed closely by storage in second place.

As compared to 90% worldwide, around 85% of Singapore businesses that have adopted AI technology believe longer data retention improves the quality of AI outcomes. On the other hand, approximately 88% of respondents who use AI today believe adoption of trustworthy AI requires an increased need to store more data for longer periods of time.

Interestingly, 90% of respondents in Singapore share the same sentiment, aligning with the global average.

Roger Entner, founder and lead analyst at Recon Analytics, said, “The survey results generally point to a coming surge in demand for data storage, with hard drives emerging as the clear winner.”

“When you consider that the business leaders we surveyed intend to store more and more of this AI-driven data in the cloud, it appears that cloud services are well-positioned to ride a second growth wave,” added Entner.

Meanwhile, BS Teh, chief commercial officer at Seagate, remarked, “Trustworthy AI is really the key to enabling mainstream adoption of AI. With the vast majority of survey respondents saying they need to store data for longer periods of time to improve quality outcomes of AI, we’re focused on areal density innovation needed to increase storage capacity for each platter in our HAMR-based hard drives.

“We have a clear pathway to more than double per-platter storage capacity over the next few years,” he ended.

The survey results highlight a growing trend of organisations retaining data for longer periods to ensure the data integrity necessary for effectively training AI models.

For AI innovation and adoption to progress, achieving greater accuracy in AI outcomes was found essential.
