Malaysia — ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has secured green financing of up to US$1.37 billion (MYR5.6 billion) to support the development of its STT Johor data centre campus in Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park.
The financing package includes a Green Loan Facility for the first phase of the campus. It was arranged with a consortium of financial institutions comprising United Overseas Bank (Malaysia) Bhd as Sole Coordinator and Mandated Lead Arranger, alongside OCBC Bank (Malaysia) Berhad, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad and CIMB Bank Berhad as Mandated Lead Arrangers.
“This financing is an important milestone in STT GDC’s continued investment in Malaysia and reflects strong confidence from our banking partners in STT Johor and the long-term fundamentals of the digital infrastructure sector,” said Nelson Lim, Group Chief Financial Officer at ST Telemedia Global Data Centres.
“As demand for cloud, AI and other digital workloads grows, disciplined, long-term capital will be critical to building infrastructure that is resilient, sustainable and able to support our customers’ requirements. The Green Loan Facility reinforces our approach to integrating sustainability into the way we finance, design, build and operate our data centres,” he continued.
The company said the financing forms part of its wider sustainability strategy. According to its latest ESG Report, renewable energy accounted for 83.2% of its electricity consumption in 2025, while carbon intensity was reduced by 70.5% against its 2021 baseline. STT GDC said this exceeded its 2028 target three years ahead of schedule.
The company also reported an average power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.44, representing a 13% improvement from its 2020 baseline, alongside a 41.2% improvement in water usage effectiveness (WUE) over the same period.
Located in Iskandar Puteri, STT Johor is planned to have up to 166MW of IT load. The campus is intended to support cloud, artificial intelligence, high-performance computing and other digital workloads.
Johor has become an increasingly important location for data centre development in Southeast Asia, supported by its connectivity, access to power infrastructure, expanding talent base and proximity to Singapore.
“STT Johor is a flagship investment that reflects our long-term commitment to Malaysia and our confidence in Johor’s role as a strategic digital infrastructure hub. The campus is being developed to support the next generation of digital infrastructure requirements, including cloud, AI and high-performance computing workloads, while contributing to Malaysia’s digital economy ambitions,” said Darryll Sinnappa, Country Head for Malaysia at ST Telemedia Global Data Centres.
“Beyond infrastructure investment, STT GDC is also committed to building local capabilities, deepening ecosystem partnerships and operating responsibly, supporting Johor’s growth as a strategic digital infrastructure hub and advancing Malaysia’s broader digital economy ambitions,” he continued.
STT GDC said the campus is also intended to support the objectives of the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ), which aims to strengthen cross-border economic cooperation and attract investment to Johor.
The company said it will progress the next stages of the campus development in coordination with government agencies, utilities and other ecosystem partners.
Its investment in Johor also includes talent development initiatives. In April 2026, STT GDC launched a local talent development programme with the Johor Talent Development Council, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and EPI Group.
The programme builds on a memorandum of understanding signed between STT GDC and JTDC in 2025, with the stated aim of developing a pipeline of skilled professionals for Johor’s data centre sector and the wider region.
STT GDC said its broader expansion strategy is focused on combining growth with resource management, operational resilience and energy efficiency, alongside collaboration with governments, utilities, customers and local communities.
