Singapore – Tencent‘s cross-border payment platform TenPay Global has partnered with Southeast Asian digital payments provider ShopeePay to roll out scan-and-pay functionality in China, the two companies announced on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
The partnership allows ShopeePay users to scan and pay at Weixin Pay QR code merchants directly through their ShopeePay and Shopee apps whilst travelling in China
Beyond this latest tie-up, TenPay Global has already established partnerships with close to 50 international digital wallets spanning 13 countries and regions.
Singapore and Thailand will be the first markets to receive the service, with Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines set to follow in later phases.
The offering draws on TenPay Global’s cross-border payment infrastructure alongside Weixin Pay’s merchant network, giving Southeast Asian travellers access to tens of millions of merchants across China through their existing ShopeePay accounts.
In addition to this, the cooperation also includes PayPal in the United States, Hana Pay and Travel Wallet in South Korea, BCEL in Laos, and HiPay in Mongolia — all of which enable international visitors to pay in China via Weixin Pay QR codes using their own home wallets.
On the other hand, the move comes as China solidifies its position as one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing travel destinations, a trend driven by improved air connectivity, more accommodating travel policies, and expanding business and cultural ties between the regions.
Consequently, as cross-border travel rises, so too does consumer demand for payment methods that work as smoothly abroad as they do at home — a shift that is pushing interoperable QR payments further into the mainstream of travel infrastructure.
“This launch marks an important milestone in ShopeePay’s efforts to build a more connected and inclusive digital payment ecosystem across the region,” said Supphavit Hongamornsin, Head of ShopeePay.
“As the first regional partner to enable Weixin Pay QR payments in China for users across multiple Southeast Asian markets, we are bringing the familiar ShopeePay experience beyond our users’ home markets, allowing them to pay as easily and conveniently abroad. As travel and commerce between Southeast Asia and China continue to grow, we believe making payments more seamless across borders can help users and businesses stay connected and unlock new opportunities,” he continued.
For its part, TenPay Global framed the partnership as part of a broader push to widen the Weixin ecosystem’s international reach.
“By enabling ShopeePay users to pay directly at Weixin Pay merchants in China, we are making travel more convenient while strengthening the digital connectivity between Southeast Asia and China,” said Wenhui Yang, CEO of TenPay Global (Singapore). “We are committed to connecting the Weixin ecosystem with global partners and continuously expanding the reach and service scenarios of cross-border payments.”
