Mastercard–JD.com partnership targets cross-border commerce and AI-driven payment innovation

Beijing, China – Mastercard and JD.com have announced a strategic partnership aimed at strengthening payments infrastructure and advancing digital commerce capabilities.

The collaboration will focus on building a more connected, secure and intelligent commerce ecosystem by combining Mastercard’s payment technology with JD.com’s digital retail, logistics and supply chain capabilities.

“This is the natural next phase in our long-standing relationship with JD.com,” said Michael Miebach, CEO of Mastercard. “Our shared creativity, deep experience and cutting-edge technology will provide people and businesses with the seamless and secure solutions they’re looking for, all while making everyday activities easier and more rewarding. Mastercard will continue to be a bridge between China and the world.”

Sandy Xu, CEO of JD.com, said the partnership would help support the company’s international expansion and enhance services for consumers and businesses globally.

“Global commerce is becoming increasingly connected and technology-driven,” she said. “Our new partnership with Mastercard will support the development of JD.com’s international business and strengthen our ability to serve consumers and businesses worldwide. By combining JD.com’s capabilities in digital retail, logistics and supply chain infrastructure with Mastercard’s payment expertise, we will jointly explore next-generation AI-powered commerce and payment experiences powered by advanced technologies, helping shape the future of digital commerce.”

As part of the collaboration, the companies will work on integrating and enhancing global payment connectivity by developing infrastructure designed to support JD.com’s international business expansion and broader global commerce use cases.

The partnership will also explore the development of a cross-border supply chain finance ecosystem aimed at helping small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) gain improved access to financing and participate more efficiently in international trade.

In addition, the companies plan to expand payment options for international travelers visiting China. This includes supporting broader acceptance of international cards and enhancing checkout, shopping and tax-refund experiences for overseas visitors across JD.com’s e-commerce platforms and retail channels.

Both companies also intend to explore agentic AI-powered purchasing solutions through Mastercard’s Agent Pay technology and expand co-branded card initiatives.

The partnership will further focus on strengthening transaction security through deeper cooperation in risk management, identity authentication and anti-fraud technologies. Enhanced real-time monitoring and fraud prevention capabilities are expected to help improve transaction security and reinforce the resilience of digital commerce systems.
