Tokyo, Japan – Hitachi has joined Anthropic’s critical infrastructure cybersecurity programme as a founding partner, with plans to contribute operational technology expertise to efforts to strengthen the resilience of essential services.
The programme focuses on cyber defence for infrastructure systems supporting power, water, manufacturing and transport. It aims to improve vulnerability detection and remediation by integrating Anthropic’s Claude AI models into products and services provided by system integrators and cybersecurity specialists serving critical infrastructure operators.
Critical infrastructure operators face challenges in applying security updates because system shutdowns can disrupt essential services.
At the same time, advances in AI are shortening the time between vulnerability disclosure and exploitation, increasing the need for systems designed to withstand cyberattacks.
Hitachi will participate in working groups and share its expertise in operational technology (OT), including systems used to manage industrial processes.
The company has expanded its collaboration with Anthropic since establishing a strategic partnership in May 2026. It has also worked on cybersecurity initiatives and, in September, launched HMAX Cyber, an operational resilience service designed to support business continuity.
Hitachi plans to use insights from the programme and discussions with other members to develop HMAX Cyber further and strengthen the cybersecurity capabilities of its OT products, including industrial control systems.
“Amid the rapid evolution of AI and the increasing sophistication and speed of cyber threats, ensuring cybersecurity in OT environments that support social infrastructure has become one of the highest priorities facing society today,” said Hiroaki Koiwa, Head of Cyber CoE, AI & Software Services Business Unit of Hitachi Ltd.
“Hitachi combines expertise cultivated through operations in sectors such as railways and energy with advanced AI technologies and offers HMAX Cyber, including support delivered through its FDE (Forward Deployed Engineer) teams, to help customers strengthen business continuity. Through participation in this program, we look forward to collaborating with Anthropic and fellow members to further enhance cyber resilience for critical infrastructure,” Koiwa continued.
The company said it would continue working with customers and partners to improve cyber defence capabilities and support the security and resilience of critical infrastructure.
