Tokyo, Japan – Fujitsu is collaborating with the State of New Mexico to establish a quantum computing research centre focused on hardware, software, algorithms and theory, alongside education and workforce-development initiatives.

The centre will bring together Fujitsu’s expertise in advanced computing and quantum technologies with New Mexico’s scientific and academic institutions. Planned activities include research partnerships, internships and academic engagement intended to create opportunities for students, researchers and engineers to work in the developing quantum sector.

New Mexico has committed US$150 million to support investments by companies establishing or expanding quantum computing operations in the state. The funding is intended to attract private investment, create skilled jobs and strengthen the region’s quantum research ecosystem. Fujitsu and the state will explore opportunities to participate in these initiatives.

Potential research partners include Sandia National Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratory, the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University. Fujitsu already works with New Mexico State University on research and development related to its FUJITSU-MONAKA CPU and associated high-performance computing solutions. The parties will explore extending this work to quantum computing and hybrid computing infrastructure.

Fujitsu will also work with the Quantum New Mexico Institute to explore ways to expand research partnerships and develop activity focused on quantum algorithms and applications, quantum systems and other areas of advanced quantum computing.

The collaboration will examine how high-performance computing based on FUJITSU-MONAKA could operate within hybrid environments combining quantum computing, quantum simulation, artificial intelligence and classical high-performance computing.

Such environments integrate quantum processors with classical systems for tasks including data preparation, simulation, optimisation, control, error mitigation and validation. The approach could support applications in materials and drug discovery, manufacturing, energy, financial services and logistics as quantum systems progress towards fault-tolerant operation.

“Fujitsu’s decision to partner with New Mexico is more proof that our bet on quantum is paying off,” said Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

“By pairing Fujitsu’s global expertise with the strength of our universities, national laboratories, and research community, we’re building an ecosystem where quantum innovation can thrive.

When I travelled to Japan to meet with business leaders and top government officials, I intended for those conversations to turn into partnerships, research and jobs back here at home. Today is a direct result of that work,” Governor Lujan Grisham continued.

“Fujitsu is uniquely positioned with technology and solution capabilities spanning microprocessors, high-performance computing, and quantum computing,” said Vivek Mahajan, Corporate Executive Officer, Corporate Vice President, CTO, in charge of System Platform at Fujitsu Limited.

“The establishment of a quantum computing research centre in New Mexico represents an important opportunity to expand our research activities and accelerate the development of next-generation quantum technologies.

By bringing together hardware, software, and applications research, the centre can advance critical work in quantum system design, engineering, and validation, while developing innovative algorithms for high-impact applications in areas such as chemistry, materials science, advanced energy, and other strategically important fields,” Mahajan continued.

The collaboration is intended to establish a foundation for long-term quantum research, linking scientific research and technology development with workforce training and potential commercial applications.
