Malaysia – DE-CIX Malaysia and Digital Penang have collaborated to launch the Penang IX (PIX), powered by DE-CIX. This initiative, officially launched by YB Gobind Singh Deo, minister of digital, and YAB Chow Kon Yeow, chief minister of Penang, establishes PIX as a central data exchange centre. The program is positioned to play a critical role in advancing the Penang state government’s digital transformation goals.
The partnership between Digital Penang and the Penang IX, driven by DE-CIX, corresponds to the area’s development into a centre of digital connectivity hub. This program is part of the Penang state government’s larger digital transformation plan, which aims to create an atmosphere that supports the expansion and advancement of digital infrastructure.
Internet traffic exchange localization within Penang is one of PIX’s main goals. Through the opportunity to host material locally, this project gives content providers the chance to lower user network latency. It is expected that this strategic move will promote the uptake of next-generation digital applications, particularly in fields like Industry 4.0 (IR4.0), Virtual Reality (VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT).These low-latency connectivity-dependent apps are set to grow in the Penang digital ecosystem, fostering effective data sharing and progress in technology.
The implementation of PIX provides potential economic growth in addition to strengthening the region’s digital infrastructure. PIX is positioned to be a driver of technical growth and economic development, drawing investments. Deliberately focusing internet traffic in one area is expected to have a cascading effect that will allow companies and entrepreneurs to develop in a connected and innovative atmosphere.
Speaking about the launch, YB Gobind Singh Deo, the minister of digital, said, “PIX’s role as a catalyst for economic growth is particularly significant. The strategic localisation of Internet traffic is poised to attract investments and stimulate technology growth, positioning Penang as a key player in the regional digital landscape. This aligns perfectly with our national agenda to not only be digitally connected but to be at the forefront of the digital revolution.”
Meanwhile, YAB Chow Kon Yeow, the chief minister of Penang, stated, “Penang IX weaves a digital tapestry that empowers our people and propels us towards a digitally advanced state in alignment with Penang2030. We aim to cultivate an environment where our innovative citizens are equipped with the necessary tools to thrive in the digital age. This initiative serves as a testament to the Penang State Government’s commitment to technological progress, unlocking gateways to economic opportunities and positioning Penang as the digital hub within the region.”
Furthermore, Wong Weng Yew, member of the board of management at DE-CIX Malaysia, said, “Penang IX’s core objective is to enable Internet traffic localisation for Penang state. The traffic localisation will improve Internet performance in Penang by reducing application network latency between participating networks. This will in turn catalyse the adoption of IR4.0, VR and IoT applications, expediting the digital transformation in the state. The launch of PIX is an important milestone in Penang’s digital ecosystem lifecycle.”
Ivo Ivanov, CEO of DE-CIX and chair of the board of DE-CIX Group AG, expressed, “This marks a significant achievement in the evolution of digital connectivity in the region. DE-CIX is proud to play a pivotal role in shaping Penang’s digital landscape. The collaboration with Digital Penang and the support from key stakeholders underscore the commitment to advancing technological infrastructure.”
He added, “Penang IX powered by DE-CIX is not just a hub for data exchange; it represents a gateway to innovation, economic growth, and the localisation of digital infrastructure. DE-CIX remains dedicated to empowering digital ecosystems worldwide, and the launch of PIX is a testament to our ongoing mission.”
Lastly, Ts. Ng Kwang Ming, chief executive officer of Digital Penang, commented, “The launch of Penang IX represents a significant advancement in Digital Penang’s dedication to creating a thriving digital ecosystem. The enhanced connectivity and reduced latency will improve the internet user experience of all Penangites. Furthermore, it empowers local startups to fully leverage the potential of digital technologies.”
“The reliable infrastructure is poised to furnish these startups with a resilient platform to facilitate the acceleration of their digital initiatives. This, in turn, is expected to open new avenues for growth and make a substantial contribution to Penang’s digital economy,” Ming added.
