FairPrice Group launches AI-powered supermarket at Singapore’s Punggol Digital District

Singapore — FairPrice Group (FPG) has opened its first ‘Store of Tomorrow’ at Punggol Digital District (PDD), Singapore, on 28 August. The outlet introduces a range of AI-driven technologies designed to enhance the grocery shopping experience and streamline operations.

The store features innovations such as hyperpersonalised recommendations, hybrid virtual and physical aisles, digital price cards, automated discount application at checkout, and AI-powered shopping assistants. Customers can also access extended product selections through digital “endless aisles” by scanning QR codes in-store with the FairPrice Group app.

This launch is part of FPG’s Store of Tomorrow (SOT) programme, announced in June 2025, which aims to pilot more than 20 new digital solutions annually over the next three years. The Punggol Digital District outlet will act as a benchmark for digitally innovative store design and serve as a testing ground for retail technology that may be extended to FPG’s wider network of over 570 outlets across Singapore.

Vipul Chawla, group CEO of FairPrice Group, explained that the company’s SOT program is about harnessing the power of digital innovations like gen AI to make every day a little better and provide more seamless experiences for customers.

“Over the last couple of years, technology has been a critical enabler for FPG to not just adapt to, but stay ahead of fast-changing consumer needs and expectations,” Vipul stated.

“FairPrice Finest PDD is the first major step on a multi-year journey to make things even easier on the experience and wallet for our customers, by reimagining what retail means for all in Singapore.”

In collaboration with Google Cloud and other technology partners, the store leverages solutions such as Vertex AI, enterprise search, and generative AI models including Gemini, Chirp, Imagen, and Veo. These are applied to create seamless, personalised shopping experiences in day-to-day customer interactions.

Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, stated the partnership with FPG is a defining moment for agentic AI deployment in retail.

“It reinforces FPG’s commitment to applying enterprise AI at scale to elevate customer experiences and foster a culture of innovation powered by people,” Thomas said.

“We see FPG’s AI transformation—extending from the storefront to the back office—as a blueprint for the entire retail industry.”

The SOT programme not only aims to provide a seamless customer experience but also emphasises empowering frontline staff. At the PDD outlet, employees are supported by tools such as Vision AI for real-time in-store monitoring and the Grocer Genie mobile app, which assists with task allocation, operational insights, and access to an AI-driven chatbot for work-related queries.

FairPrice Group will continue to assess these innovations under a prototype, pilot, and scale approach. Successful solutions may be deployed across its broader retail ecosystem, which includes supermarkets, Unity pharmacies, Cheers convenience stores, and Kopitiam food courts.
