New York, USA – Multinational technology corporation International Business Machines (IBM) has announced it has been working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch its newest cloud database offering that enables customers to optimise data management for AI workloads.

The partnership will combine IBM’s Db2 database with Amazon’s Relational Database Service (RDS) to help businesses unlock greater value by managing their data with more flexibility, security, and scalability.

Amazon RDS for Db2 will combine the operational expertise and convenience of Amazon RDS to automate database administration with IBM Db2’s decades of experience running mission-critical workloads for large banks, supply chain operations, and retail and e-commerce businesses.

With the integration of Amazon RDS into Db2, customers can now modernise on premises, on AWS, or deploy a hybrid cloud architecture to optimise their AI workloads. Additionally, customers planning to migrate to AWS can now easily transfer their existing, self-managed Db2 databases to the cloud, automating time-consuming database administrative tasks such as provisioning, backups, software patching, and monitoring.

Amazon RDS for Db2 users can also accelerate their modernization and AI initiatives by leveraging IBM’s integrated data and AI features on AWS, including commercial databases, data fabric solutions, Watsonx data, AI, and select AI governance capabilities.

Dinesh Nirmal, senior vice president of products at IBM Software, said, “Digital transformation is a strategic imperative for nearly every one of our clients. By working with AWS to bring Db2 to Amazon RDS, we’re helping companies prepare for the next generation of applications, analytics, and AI workloads that will power the modern economy. IBM and AWS are redefining the possibilities of cloud database innovation, removing the complexity of modernization, and empowering organisations to realise the full potential of their data.”

Commenting on the partnership, Jeff Carter, VP for databases and migrations at AWS, also said, “We are pleased to collaborate with IBM to make it easier for customers to manage and modernise the highly-regarded and trusted IBM Db2 database in the cloud.”

He added, “For over a decade, Amazon RDS has offered hundreds of thousands of customers proven operational expertise, security best practices, and best-in-class managed database services for their mission-critical workloads. With Amazon RDS for Db2, customers can offload time-consuming database administrative tasks, such as provisioning, backups, patching, and monitoring, and use Amazon RDS multi-AZ deployments for high availability and durability. Customers can also easily take advantage of the broad portfolio of AWS services, including ability to accelerate their generative AI priorities.”
