Singapore – PhonePe, a software development firm, has announced that it has recently partnered with digital cross-border payments company Liquid Group. This collaboration aims to expand the firm’s merchant acceptance network in Singapore, allowing Indian travellers to experience seamless payment options.
According to the company, the alliance further enables travellers to make quick payments through the PhonePe, which could be done by scanning its QR codes at major tourist destinations.
The solution is also available at renowned spots such as the Changi Airport, duty-free stores, restaurants, bars, and popular outlets including The Cocoa Trees, Charles & Keith, Luvenus Jewellery, and Hard Rock Café. These QR codes can also be found at transportation services and sightseeing points, offering them convenience across the city.
Beyond these capabilities, Liquid Group’s collaboration with NPCI International Payments Limited further allows merchants to accept UPI payments.
PhonePe users, in particular, can easily scan the QR codes displayed by merchants and complete their transactions in Indian rupees, ensuring transparency in payment workflows.
Earlier in 2024, PhonePe has also introduced additional features to improve its UPI-powered functions, encompassing components like international remittance and non-resident Indian payments.
The international remittance, more specifically, allows users to receive money internationally through the PayNow-UPI real-time remittance corridor. This feature accelerates the money transfer process through the use of the UPI infrastructure. The said move also eliminates the necessity for customers to provide bank account details or IFSC codes.
Meanwhile, the NRI payments enable users to link their NRE/NRO bank accounts to the PhonePe app. This approach enables them to make payments for various services in India, such as utility bill payments, fund transfers to friends and family in India, and merchant payments on e-commerce platforms or at physical stores.
Talking about the partnership, Ritesh Pai, CEO of International Payments at PhonePe, remarked, “We are excited to collaborate with Liquid Group to bring the ease of UPI payments to Indian travellers in Singapore.”
“As a popular destination among Indian tourists, we’re delighted to offer them a simple and quick way to pay at their favourite dining, shopping, and sightseeing locations, enhancing their overall travel experience,” Pai further explained.
Alvin Seck, CCO at Liquid Group, also said, “We are pleased to collaborate with PhonePe to improve the payment experience for Indian travellers in Singapore.”
Seck then added, “By integrating UPI into our broad merchant network, we are simplifying transactions and strengthening our commitment to seamless cross-border payment solutions. This partnership supports our aim of making global payments more efficient and accessible for both consumers and businesses.”
