Hanoi, Vietnam – JCB International and Hanoi Metro have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to introduce contactless card payments at fare gates on Hanoi’s urban railway network. The service, called JCB transit, is scheduled to launch in early 2027.
The agreement was signed on 29 October between JCB International Co., Ltd., the international operations subsidiary of JCB Co., Ltd., and Hanoi Metro One Member Limited Liability Company. JCB describes itself as Japan’s only international payment brand.
Under the planned service, JCB Cardmembers will be able to tap their JCB contactless cards or compatible devices directly at metro fare gates. The companies say this will make travel faster and more seamless.
The partnership also targets international visitors, according to the companies. Travellers from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other markets would be able to use their existing JCB payment method without buying a separate transit ticket or carrying cash.
The launch forms part of JCB’s wider effort to expand contactless payments in public transport. The company also says it supports the development of cashless payment in Vietnam.
Takumi Takahashi, Executive Vice President, JCB International Co., Ltd., said, “JCB International is delighted to collaborate with Hanoi Metro to introduce JCB transit in Hanoi. We hope this service will provide greater convenience to JCB Cardmembers and contribute to the development of a modern and cashless public transportation ecosystem in Vietnam.”
Meanwhile, the two organisations will continue working together to complete the necessary preparations. Neither has yet disclosed details such as fares or the stations that will accept the service.
