Bitdefender unveils new tool to tackle shadow AI risk in the workplace

Singapore – Bitdefender has launched a new solution designed to give organisations visibility into how employees are using artificial intelligence tools, alongside the ability to reduce the risks that usage creates.

Named GravityZone AI Visibility and Control, the offering targets what the company describes as one of the fastest-growing attack surfaces in enterprise environments today.

According to Bitdefender, AI adoption has outpaced most organisations’ ability to secure it. The company points to a global survey of 1,200 cybersecurity practitioners, which found that nearly half of organisations, 47%, lack full visibility into employee AI tool usage.

Research firm Gartner has also weighed in on the trend, predicting that “by 2030, over 40% of enterprises will suffer security or compliance incidents linked to unauthorized shadow AI.”

To address the gap, Bitdefender built the new capability as an add-on to GravityZone, its existing unified security, risk management, and compliance platform. That platform already delivers endpoint detection and response (EDR), extended detection and response (XDR), cloud-native security, and GravityZone PHASR, a dynamic attack surface reduction tool the company markets as first-to-market.

Bitdefender says the platform also provides deep security context for detections, along with a direct path to its Managed Detection and Response (MDR) services.

In terms of how it works, GravityZone AI Visibility and Control relies on the existing GravityZone agent to scan environments for AI tools and applications. Each finding is then assessed and assigned a risk level, giving IT and security teams the context needed to prioritise and remediate the highest-risk exposures.

On the detection front, the tool is designed to uncover both sanctioned and unsanctioned AI tools running across an environment. This includes chatbots, local large language models (LLMs), coding assistants, autonomous agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, and AI-enabled software-as-a-service applications, giving security teams a comprehensive inventory of AI usage.

Beyond detection, the solution ranks AI usage by risk level, prioritising unknown or high-risk activity over routine business use. Security teams can then enforce policy through existing GravityZone controls, such as application control and web filtering, to allow, restrict, or block specific AI tools accordingly.

The tool also pairs with GravityZone PHASR to apply dynamic hardening based on AI behaviour. Telemetry from AI activity establishes a behavioural baseline for AI agents, which is then used to continuously adjust security hardening in response to that activity and established rules, reducing exposure without requiring manual tuning.

Consolidation is another stated benefit. By managing AI risk alongside existing attack surfaces within a single platform, Bitdefender says organisations can avoid the added cost and complexity of running a standalone AI security tool.

The company frames the launch against a broader shift in the threat landscape, noting that AI-enabled attacks now move at machine speed, shortening the window between initial compromise and impact.

As a result, Bitdefender argues that a reactive detection and response strategy alone is no longer sufficient, and that organisations must instead adopt a prevention-first approach that disrupts attacks early and closes off opportunities for compromise before they can be exploited.

Commenting on the launch, Daniel Daraban, Vice President of Products at Bitdefender Business Solutions Group, said, “AI adoption is moving faster than most security teams can manage, leaving organizations exposed to risks they can’t see.”

“Closing that gap requires a prevention-first security mindset that identifies and stops threats up front, before they ever reach detection and response or higher defense layers. GravityZone AI Visibility and Control brings that same mindset to AI, so organizations can embrace it with confidence and without unnecessary risk or overhead,” Daraban concluded.

The launch marks the latest step in Bitdefender’s broader push to simplify security operations for customers navigating the AI era.
