London, England – Smartstream has launched a new version of Smart Reconciliations Premium, introducing agentic AI designed to investigate, progress and resolve reconciliation exceptions autonomously.
The company said the update is intended to help financial institutions manage growing post-trade demands, including shorter settlement cycles and increasing audit requirements.
The release is built around four principles that Smartstream calls GRIT: Governance, ROI, Integration and Trust. The company said its Smart Agents can investigate and act on exceptions, with actions logged, explainable, and with human accountability maintained.
“For four decades our clients have relied on us for the reconciliation truth their businesses depend on, and their regulators inspect,” said Thomas Steinborn, Chief Product & Technology Officer at Smartstream.
“This release puts AI underneath that foundation rather than beside it, so the platform no longer simply records and matches: it investigates, reasons, resolves, and learns, within boundaries our clients set and can evidence. That is the difference between AI that describes and AI that acts, and it is where the returns are,” Steinborn continued.
Governance, integration and automation
Smartstream said the platform provides centralised controls for AI models, workflows and permissions, alongside audit trails and options to run models within a client’s own environment for sensitive use cases.
Its automation capabilities include supervised machine learning and unsupervised fuzzy matching, aimed at reducing manual investigations and improving matching efficiency.
Outbound application programming interfaces (APIs) and the Model Context Protocol (MCP) allow enterprise systems and AI assistants to query data, trigger workflows and perform approved actions while retaining existing permissions and audit controls.
The platform supports eight reconciliation domains—securities, cash, treasury, payments, general ledger, net asset value, over-the-counter derivatives and digital assets—on a single real-time engine. Smartstream said deployments take weeks, not months.
The updated platform launched at an event in London and is due to be showcased at a global financial services event in Miami from 28 September to 1 October 2026.
