Equinix plans Kuala Lumpur data centre to support AI growth

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Equinix has announced plans to expand its operations in Malaysia through the development of a new International Business Exchange (IBX) data centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Equinix’s proposed facility, known as KL2, is intended to support rising demand for digital infrastructure linked to cloud computing, AI and enterprise workloads, while contributing to Malaysia’s broader digital economy and regional connectivity requirements.

The site will be located in Cyberjaya, less than one kilometre from the company’s existing KL1 data centre. KL2 will become Equinix’s fourth facility in Malaysia, adding to its current presence in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, where the company operates JH1 and is preparing JH2.

The project represents part of a wider investment programme in the country exceeding US$190m and is expected to provide capacity for more than 2,200 cabinets once fully completed.

“This expansion marks an important milestone in our journey to elevate Malaysia’s digital economy. By providing AI-ready infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur and Johor responsibly, we are directly supporting national agendas to advance the country’s AI ambitions,” Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Malaysia at Equinix, stated.

“KL2 will not only enable businesses to process data closer to the source and deploy Distributed AI with agility, but it will also drive high-value job creation and build long-term economic resilience for the nation.”

The new centre is being designed to provide low-latency and highly connected infrastructure for critical workloads. It is expected to serve digital-native businesses, hyperscale cloud providers and multinational firms seeking to expand in Southeast Asia. The announcement comes as Malaysia seeks to strengthen its role in regional digital and AI development through initiatives including the National Artificial Intelligence Office and the MyDIGITAL programme.

Additionally, the KL2 would be connected to its wider network across Malaysia and Singapore through Equinix Fabric. Customers are expected to have access to network management tools and AI-driven analytics intended to improve routing efficiency, bandwidth allocation and support for distributed workloads across the region.

KL2 is also planned with sustainability targets, including full renewable energy coverage from the first day of operations, aligned with the company’s global 2030 objective.

Equinix currently operates more than 280 data centres in 77 markets across 36 countries. In Asia-Pacific, its portfolio includes 65 facilities spanning Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore.
