ShopeePay launches cross-border QR payments for Singapore users through Alipay+ global network

Singapore – ShopeePay has introduced cross-border QR payment capabilities for users in Singapore through an integration with Alipay+, the global digital wallet gateway operated by Ant International.

The move represents ShopeePay’s first overseas payment initiative and enables Singapore-based users to make purchases at physical merchants abroad by scanning QR codes and completing transactions through the ShopeePay application without the need for cash or currency conversion.

The integration connects ShopeePay to the Alipay+ network, which links digital wallets and payment partners across more than 100 markets and supports access to over 150 million offline merchants globally. Users in Singapore can progressively make payments at participating retailers in multiple destinations by scanning merchant QR codes and confirming the transaction within the ShopeePay platform.

The cross-border payment function is initially available across 28 markets and will be extended gradually to additional countries and regions in the coming months. The collaboration is also expected to expand to ShopeePay users in other Southeast Asian markets over time.

“When overseas QR acceptance is fragmented, consumers often fall back on cards that may not be widely accepted by smaller merchants and can come with unclear foreign exchange costs,” Benjamin Tan, head of ShopeePay Singapore, stated.

“By enabling cross-border QR payments, we are closing that gap: bringing the simplicity, transparency, and accessibility users value at home to their journeys abroad.”

Through the partnership, ShopeePay customers gain access to a broader ecosystem of local payment infrastructures integrated with Alipay+. These include national payment frameworks such as DuitNow in Malaysia and ZeroPay in South Korea, along with other regional acquiring partners.

This arrangement allows travellers to make payments at participating physical stores while receiving exchange rates displayed within the application and retaining eligibility for platform-based rewards.

“We’re proud to bring cross-border payment capabilities to ShopeePay, extending their reach beyond local payments, and giving Singaporeans more choices when travelling abroad,” Yan Pan, head of strategic partnership office for Alipay+ at Ant International, commented.

“We will also continue to support ShopeePay users across Southeast Asia to enjoy this convenient and seamless feature. By bringing together more users and merchants through the Alipay+ ecosystem, we can collectively build a more connected, inclusive digital economy.”

The launch takes place amid wider efforts across Asia to strengthen interoperability between national QR payment systems and facilitate digital transactions across borders.

In Singapore, digital wallets are becoming increasingly common for in-store purchases, with projections indicating that such transactions could represent approximately 44% of total POS payment value by 2030. The trend reflects growing consumer demand for faster and more convenient payment methods both domestically and when travelling internationally.

Under the new arrangement, ShopeePay users visiting participating destinations will be able to complete transactions through the same QR-based process used in Singapore, with settlement handled through the integrated digital wallet infrastructure.
