Singapore – Amazon and Anthropic have extended their strategic partnership, focusing on scaling AI infrastructure and advancing generative AI capabilities. Under the revised arrangement, Anthropic plans to utilise up to 5 GW of computing capacity based on current and forthcoming generations of Amazon’s Trainium processors to support the development and operation of its advanced models.
The collaboration builds on work initiated in 2023 aimed at accelerating the adoption of generative AI across multiple sectors. More than 100,000 customers are now running Anthropic’s Claude models on the AWS platform, positioning the model family among the most widely used offerings on Amazon Bedrock.
The companies have also collaborated on large-scale computing initiatives, including Project Rainier, a major AI cluster designed to support extensive model training and deployment.
“Anthropic’s commitment to run its large language models on AWS Trainium for the next decade reflects the progress we’ve made together on custom silicon, as we continue delivering the technology and infrastructure our customers need to build with generative AI,” Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, commented.
As part of the expanded arrangement, Anthropic has committed to spending in excess of US$100b over the next decade on AWS technologies. This includes access to successive versions of Trainium processors as well as extensive use of Graviton-based computing cores, with the aim of improving performance efficiency and cost effectiveness. The agreement also includes increased inference capabilities across Asia and Europe to support a growing international user base.
AWS customers will also gain access to Anthropic’s native Claude platform directly through their existing AWS accounts, enabling use within established access controls and monitoring systems without additional credentials or contractual arrangements. Users may choose between accessing Claude through its dedicated platform or via Amazon Bedrock, depending on operational requirements.
“Our collaboration with Amazon will allow us to continue advancing AI research while delivering Claude to our customers, including the more than 100,000 building on AWS,” Dario Amodei, CEO and co-founder of Anthropic, stated.
In financial terms, Amazon will invest an additional US$5b in Anthropic immediately, with the possibility of a further US$20b tied to future performance milestones, adding to its earlier US$8b investment.
The partnership reflects a broader focus on advancing AI research, expanding infrastructure capacity and supporting enterprise adoption of generative AI technologies.
