Hong Kong – DBS Bank (Hong Kong) Limited has introduced a multi-currency debit card built on UnionPay‘s payment infrastructure, enabling cardholders to transact seamlessly across Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau without the friction typically associated with cross-border payments.
The DBS UnionPay Diamond Debit Card draws on UnionPay’s extensive acceptance network and mobile payment capabilities, allowing cardholders to pay across multiple markets using a single card, according to DBS Hong Kong.
That underlying payment technology is what powers the card’s rebate structure, with cardholders earning up to 10% back on spending across Mainland China, Taiwan and Macau, 5% on other overseas spending, and 2% locally in Hong Kong.
The launch, announced on 22 September 2026, reflects a wider push by banks to embed cross-border payment interoperability directly into everyday banking products rather than treating it as a separate service.
Layered on top of the payment functionality is a set of new travel-oriented perks aimed at frequent cross-border customers.
Cardholders can access up to three one-way premium limousine transfers, providing a point-to-point ride across the border.
The card also unlocks entry to more than 1,900 airport and China High-Speed Railway lounges, giving travellers a place to rest or work before departure.
Rounding out the package is comprehensive travel insurance, covering personal accidents, medical expenses and travel inconveniences for added peace of mind on every trip.
The move comes as cross-border transaction volumes across Greater China continue to recover, pushing banks to invest in payment technology that can keep pace with increasingly mobile, multi-market spending patterns.
Maggie Du, Managing Director and Head of Deposits, Payment & Secured Lending, Customer Banking Group, DBS Hong Kong, said, “Cross-border travel and spending across Greater China have continued to recover strongly, creating growing demand for seamless, secure and rewarding payment solutions.”
“As customers increasingly transact across multiple markets, they are looking for banking products that can help them manage their finances more efficiently while maximising the value of their spending. DBS UnionPay Diamond Debit Card further enhances our debit card portfolio by combining cross-border spending rewards and travel privileges, catering to customers’ evolving lifestyle and spending needs,” Du added.
Meanwhile, UnionPay International has framed the tie-up as part of a broader push to extend its payment acceptance network and mobile payment capabilities into everyday cross-border banking products.
Roger Lee, Vice President of UnionPay International Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan Region, said, “We are pleased to further deepen our strategic partnership with DBS Hong Kong. Through the DBS UnionPay Diamond Multi-currency Debit Card, we combine UnionPay’s extensive acceptance network, diverse mobile payment capabilities and a rich suite of travel and consumption benefits, enabling cardholders to make seamless payments worldwide.”
“Moving forward, UnionPay International will continue to collaborate with DBS Hong Kong to expand products and benefits covering cardholders’ cross-border travel, shopping, transportation and other scenarios, delivering more convenient payment services for their cross-border spending,” Lee concluded
Together, the launch points to a broader trend among Hong Kong banks of embedding cross-border payment technology directly into consumer banking products, rather than positioning it as a standalone travel service.
