Hsinchu, Taiwan – MediaTek and Airoha Technology are showcasing connectivity platforms spanning Wi-Fi, 5G customer premises equipment (CPE) and passive optical networking (PON), as telecom operators look to upgrade infrastructure to support growing demand from AI applications.
The companies said AI services require network infrastructure capable of delivering higher bandwidth, low latency and reliable connectivity at scale. Their portfolio covers fibre-optic access, wireless broadband and home and enterprise connectivity.
The combined portfolio is designed to give telecom operators access to PON, 5G CPE and Wi-Fi technologies through a single partner, while supporting software ecosystems including OpenWrt, RDK-B and prplOS. The companies said this approach could help reduce system integration requirements and speed up deployment of new services.
MediaTek and Airoha are also positioning their connectivity platforms around the transition from Wi-Fi 7 to Wi-Fi 8, XGS-PON to 50G-PON, and 5G to 5G-Advanced.
According to the companies, the development of AI applications is increasing requirements for bandwidth, reliability, energy efficiency and connectivity across multiple devices. This is putting greater emphasis on integrating fibre access, mobile broadband and Wi-Fi rather than upgrading individual connectivity technologies in isolation.
The companies said they have worked to integrate their PON, 5G CPE and Wi-Fi technologies from the product planning and development stages. They are also working with ecosystem partners to support network upgrades intended to extend connectivity from cloud and data centre infrastructure to homes, businesses and connected devices.
MediaTek and Airoha said their experience spans product definition, silicon development, software integration, system validation and lifecycle support, with billions of devices produced each year globally.
The companies are presenting their latest connectivity technologies as telecom operators move towards networks designed to support increasingly distributed AI services and applications.
