Bupa Hong Kong taps Cognizant for AI-driven BPaaS to modernise health insurance claims processing

Hong Kong – Bupa Hong Kong has appointed Cognizant to implement an AI–enabled business-process-as-a-service (BPaaS) offering aimed at overhauling its health insurance claims operations.

The agreement spans five years and marks Cognizant’s first deployment of an AI-led BPaaS model for claims transformation in Hong Kong, as well as its largest Intuitive Operations and Automation services engagement in the market.

The programme will combine cloud-based architecture with generative AI–supported claims handling and enhanced mechanisms for identifying fraud, waste, and abuse. The integrated approach is intended to improve operational performance, reinforce regulatory alignment, and elevate service delivery for policyholders.

“We’re delighted to collaborate with Cognizant to adopt an AI-first approach, aiming to streamline claims processing, reduce operational friction and mitigate risks,” Earvin Lim, chief information officer at Bupa Hong Kong, stated.

He added, “By leveraging Cognizant’s expertise in AI automation and cloud-native solutions, we are confident that this collaboration will not only help accelerate claims modernisation but also support Bupa’s regulatory compliance objectives and enhance customer satisfaction.”

The agreement aims to accelerate claims turnaround times, strengthen customer satisfaction metrics, and improve overall efficiency across claims functions.

The solution is also designed to support regulatory processes while enabling the consolidation of skills, institutional knowledge, and operational resources to create more responsive workflows.

Through higher levels of automation and reduced processing times, Bupa Hong Kong is seeking to improve customer advocacy indicators and maintain its competitive position within the local health insurance sector.

“This relationship demonstrates our dedication to advancing digital transformation across the region,” Thomas Mathew, vice president of ASEAN & Greater China at Cognizant, commented.

He added, “As the collaboration develops, we see significant opportunities to support Bupa’s technology and operational ambitions to deliver our BPaaS expertise more widely and deliver transformative solutions at scale.”

For Cognizant, the engagement reflects its broader strategy to expand AI-driven operational services in APAC, applying data-centric automation and scalable delivery models to complex industry processes.

The collaboration is expected to support Bupa Hong Kong’s ongoing technology modernisation efforts and contribute to the wider digital transformation of healthcare insurance services in the region.
