Singapore – S&P Global Ratings has launched the Vault Risk Assessment (VRA), a new analytical approach to gauge the risks facing investors in blockchain-based lending vaults, as deposits in the sector reach US$10 billion.
The division of S&P Global (NYSE: SPGI) unveiled the framework in Singapore on 4 October 2026. According to the company, it delivers independent, forward-looking insight into the risks tied to digital asset lending vaults.
Vaults are investment vehicles that operate on a blockchain, pooling investor deposits and deploying them under defined strategies. S&P Global says they work much like managed fixed income funds.
Total vault deposits stood at USD 10 billion as of September 2026, up from USD 1.5 billion two years earlier, the company reports. Even so, strategy and risk disclosures for vaults have typically been limited, despite the point-in-time transparency that blockchain activity offers.
The VRA targets that gap. S&P Global Ratings describes it as a forward-looking opinion on the overall relative risk of impairment to an investor’s position in a lending vault.
To build that view, the assessment weighs six risk factors: portfolio credit quality, liquidity mismatch, curator, blockchain, protocol, and vault security and governance.
S&P Global Ratings stressed that a VRA is not a credit rating and does not comment on yield levels. Further details, including the letter-based scale, are published on the company’s website.
The company argues that the approach moves beyond transaction transparency to deliver risk transparency. In its view, that should help institutions refine their investment governance and vault selection, while supporting broader adoption of the market.
“As digital assets continue to institutionalise, the demand for independent risk assessments that bridge traditional finance and decentralised innovation is paramount,” said Yann Le Pallec, President, S&P Global Ratings.
“Our commitment to bringing transparency and rigorous analysis to all financial markets extends to this rapidly growing segment. The Vault Risk Assessment will empower investors and foster greater confidence and stability as capital flows into these new digital structures,” Pallec added.
James Wiemken, Executive Managing Director and Head of Global Ratings Services, echoed that view.
“Digital asset vaults represent a significant evolution in onchain finance, offering new avenues for pooled investment and capital efficiency,” said Wiemken.
“However, the inherent complexities and varying disclosure standards in this nascent market create a clear need for a standardised, independent risk perspective. The VRA fills this critical gap, providing market participants with the deep insights necessary to navigate vault investments with greater clarity and confidence,” Wiemken added.
The launch follows a run of digital asset milestones for the group. S&P Global lists the industry’s first Stablecoin Stability Assessments and the first credit rating of a DeFi protocol, Sky Protocol, among them.
